Despite its prevalence in the US, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) research is hugely under funded. ASD affects more individuals in the US than Leukemia, Muscular Dystrophy, Cystic Fibrosis, and Juvenile Diabetes, but receives the least national funding.
We have a friend who recently lost her husband in Afghanistan that cares for autistic children. I wanted to run for a reason besides personal recreation and that is how we decided to join Team 4 Autism. A common statistic is 1 out of 110 children have autism. However, there are far many more mild cases that do not get diagnosed or reported. That is where you come in. With better funding we can help researchers gather the information we are missing to solve this mystery and help these kids live more functional lifes.
